At three in the morning the Boonton Turnpike is a tunnel of headlights and falling snow, and the driveways off it climb straight into the dark. Dell Outdoor is out on those grades while Kinnelon sleeps — plowing the long approaches, opening turnarounds wide enough to back a car out, cutting the walkways down to the door. Highlands driveways bend and pitch, so every pass gets planned in advance: where the snow can go, where ice will form once the sun finally reaches that curve. Salt and sand go down on the steep runs and the shaded corners that never thaw on their own. Morning comes, the pavement is black and open, and nobody has to think about how it got that way.
