A Small Green Space

About A Small Green Space

Essex Fells has no sidewalks to speak of; the roads curve, the stone walls follow them, and the oaks close in overhead. A Small Green Space tends lawns in that shade — mowing, trimming and edging on properties where grass shares its ground with roots and long afternoons of shadow. Evening rewards the effort, when the cutting is done and the light comes low and gold between the trunks. The pleasure is in the finish work: a tidy line around a wall, a border cut true, the drive blown off before leaving. Small, well-kept ground reads as calm, and calm is what people want from a town like this.
