The dam at Lake Manalapan holds a whole small lake in the middle of the borough, and in late May the spillway carries its noise up the hill into the neighborhoods. Acey Landscaping is out on those streets by then, in the first full swing of the season, when the grass grows faster than anyone can keep up with alone. It is plain work done properly: even passes, a trimmed line along the foundation and the fence, edges cut so the walk shows its full width again. Autumn clears the leaves away; spring clears whatever the cold piled into the corners of the yard. Jamesburg is small enough that a well-kept lawn gets noticed, and that is rather the point.
