At Neshanic Station the old iron bridge crosses the South Branch of the Raritan, and the valley opens out behind it in fields and low ridgelines. Neshanic Valley takes its name from that ground and works it, mowing, edging and running seasonal cleanups through the green months, then plowing and clearing driveways once the first heavy snow fills the hollows. Cold pools down here; the valley holds it longer than the higher ground does, so winter work starts early and finishes late. The reward is the sight of a driveway opened wide and a lawn cut true, both of them looking deliberate. Hillsborough Township ground, handled by people who know its low places.
