Hightstown grew up along a rail line, and the old right-of-way still draws a straight green seam behind the backyards. Olsen's Lawn & Landscaping works those yards in both directions of the calendar. October is the big push — leaves off the lawn, beds cleared, edges recut before the ground stiffens — and then the year turns and the same driveways want plowing, the same walks want shoveling and salt. There is a particular pleasure in the January version of the work: the storm ends, the sky goes cold and bright, and by mid-morning every drive on the route is open and squared to the pavement. Mowing, trimming and edging carry the summer; the plow carries the winter.
