Late on an August afternoon the sun drops behind Newark and throws the skyline flat across Harrison's rooftops, and every lawn in town goes gold for about ten minutes. Reed Lawncare spends the day earning that view — mowing, trimming around posts and hydrants and basement windows, edging the front strip, hauling the clippings out instead of leaving them to yellow on the walk. The lots here are modest and hard-used, wedged between driveways and brick, so the difference between cut and cared-for lives entirely in the details. Doing those details in the heat, at the far end of a long route, is the actual job. The gold ten minutes is just where the day happens to end.
