By October the corn is down along Route 45 and the low gold afternoons make Harrison Township look like a painting of itself. Gill's Landscaping Inc. is out in the middle of that, closing the mowing season and moving into cleanups — cutting back, edging, clearing leaves off lawns and walks and out of the beds before the ground goes cold. Fall is the unglamorous half of lawn care and the half that shows up again in April. Out here the properties are wide and the wind moves the leaves back once for every twice you move them, which is simply part of the arrangement. Putting a yard away right, ahead of the first hard frost, is how a good spring starts.
