Saturday morning on the grid of streets off Central Avenue, half of Hammonton is outside with a coffee, looking at its own grass. J & A Landscaping and Lawn Service is out there too, running the route: mowing, edging along every walk and drive, trimming the corners, blowing the concrete clean behind. Beds get mulched when they need it, and cleanups take the year's two big messes off the lawn in spring and again in fall. Grass cut properly holds its color longer in this sandy soil, so mowing height and blade sharpness matter more than most people think. By noon the block looks like somebody meant it that way.
