The Appalachian Trail crosses the valley floor just east of Hamburg on a long boardwalk over the Pochuck marsh, and hikers come off it into town looking for a meal and a bench. The Bearded Contractor works the yards those walkers pass — mowing, string trimming, edging along paths and drives, and carrying out the debris that collects between seasons. Wetland ground nearby means humid air and quick growth once the days stretch out. A lawn out here can go shaggy in ten days without help. Bringing one back to a clean, level cut is the kind of small restoration that shows from the road.
