On the high western side of Hackensack, Borg's Woods keeps a ravine of oak and tulip poplar — a pocket of the old Bergen County forest that survived the streets growing up around it. Portland Springs Tree Services LLC tends the lawns in the yards below that hillside, where the ground still tips and the shade comes and goes with the hour. October is the honest test of a property here: the leaves fall for weeks, and turf only breathes again once they are cleared off and the grass is taken down short for the cold. There is a plain pleasure in that after-picture, a lawn raked open to low autumn light with the beds edged and nothing left banked against the fence. Then April, and the first cut of the year on soft ground, when everything green in this town is in a hurry at once.
