Summer in Hackensack smells like cut grass by nine in the morning. Over by Johnson Park the shade pools under the big trees, sprinklers tick away on the lawns nearby, and The Grass Boys are already working their way down the block. They mow, they trim the fence lines, they edge the walks so the border is a clean line rather than a guess, and they take the clippings with them. Come autumn they clear the leaves off before the first hard rain mats them into the turf. Simple work, done on time, for yards in Hackensack, Teaneck, Bogota and Little Ferry.
