The land in Garfield tilts — up from the Passaic toward Belmont Hill — so half the lawns in town are worked on a grade, mower turned across the slope, feet set sideways in the wet grass. Evening light arrives late and lies long over the rooftops here, and a lawn finished at that hour looks like it has been combed.
