Franklin Lakes wakes slowly in winter — the borough's namesake water lying flat and pewter at the foot of the Ramapos, snow spilling down off the ridges from the northwest long before it ever reaches Route 208. Vasile Green Landscape works those hours, on the long wooded driveways off Colonial Road, the curved aprons where drift collects, the walkways buried while the house is still asleep. Snow removal here is a matter of geometry and patience: plow the pitch, shovel the steps square, salt the shaded turns where ice hides longest beneath the oaks. There is a real satisfaction in a driveway opened clean down to the asphalt before the first headlights slide along Franklin Avenue, and in a front path cut straight enough to walk without thinking. By the time the sun clears the treeline, the storm has become somebody else's memory and the day is simply allowed to begin.
