Late in November the Hudson pushes fog up over the ridge, and Fort Lee's lawns come out of it grey with damp and thick with leaves. Vee's Botanicals and Son is out along Jones Road in that weather for the final cuts and the fall cleanup, clearing a yard down to bare turf before the freeze arrives. In the growing months the same route is mowing, edging and trimming on a steady rotation, nothing skipped. There is nothing showy about it — grass held at an even height and borders kept sharp from April to the end of the run. A yard put away right in the fall is a yard that comes back fast in the spring.
