Along Palisade Avenue the buildings stand right at the lip of the cliff, and the lawns at their feet come out of winter pale and flattened. Fort Lee's ground sits on rock, so a good lawn in this borough is earned rather than assumed, and it shows in the stripes that come up by May. Through the growing months it is regular mowing and trimming, with the shrub line kept honest and the walks blown clean. The reward is a green shelf of grass with the Hudson moving along a few hundred feet below it.
