Half the lawns around Flanders sit on a slope, terraced back from the road and stepping down toward the valley and the fairways below. P&J Landscape Design LLC cuts them the way a slope asks to be cut — across the grade, with clean turns at the ends — then edges the walks and drives so the lines hold on ground that keeps trying to move. Beds are mulched each spring and kept clear through the season, and hedges and shrubs are shaped so the view down the hill stays open. In October the whole basin turns copper at once and the cleanup begins, leaf by leaf and gutter line by gutter line. A hillside yard that looks level from the street took somebody a while to make it look that way.
