The year splits in two on this ridge. From spring through October, Jem Tree Service and Contracting is cutting grass in Flanders — weekly mowing, string trimming along walls and fence lines, mulch in the beds, and the long leaf work a Morris County autumn demands. Then the wind changes, the high ground takes the first snow in the state, and the same trucks go back out with plows: driveways cleared, walks opened, salt down on the ice that sets up in the shade of the oaks. On a clear winter afternoon the long line of Schooley's Mountain is visible from half the properties on the route. Both halves of the year come down to the same thing, which is showing up on the day it matters.
