October does not arrive gradually in a town this wooded — it lands, usually in one windy week, and Fanwood vanishes under its own canopy. Land Scapes, LLC spends that stretch moving leaves: off the lawns before they mat, out of the beds before they smother what is underneath, away from the walks and the curb line on the street side. The rest of the year those same yards get weekly mowing, clean edges along the drive, and mulch worked into the borders each spring. Working beside the borough's little pocket of preserved woods is a standing reminder that leaves are only a problem where grass is trying to live. By late November the turf is breathing again and ready for the cold.
