Radburn was drawn around its greens — footpaths behind the houses, trees given the middle of the block instead of the curb — and Fair Lawn has been growing into that idea ever since. David's Tree Care tends both sides of town, the interior parks and the narrow side yards down toward the Passaic: pruning to hold a shape, clearing limbs off roofs and walkways, taking dead wood down before a March wind does it first. Along the Saddle River park strip the ground stays wet and the tall ones can loosen; when a tree is finished, it leaves in pieces, lowered rather than dropped. Storm work is a full day of cutting and carrying until the paths are clear and the lawn is only lawn again. Fair Lawn, Glen Rock, Paramus and the Bergen towns beside them keep their canopy that way.
