Fair Haven runs down to the Navesink, and the river sends its weather straight up the side streets — soft and salty in summer, raw in January. Scanlon's Lawn & Landscape Service Inc. works both ends of that: mowing, trimming, edging and cleanups beneath the borough's big shade trees, then plowing and salting the drives when a nor'easter comes in off the water. These lawns sit under old canopies, so cutting height and timing matter more than horsepower. On a winter morning the aim is simple — the drive open and the walk down toward River Road clear before anybody needs it. On a June evening it is grass cut even, borders sharp, and the smell of it drifting to the porch.
