June in the back yards of Elmwood Park is a crowded, generous business — beds crowding the fence, a hedge doing its best to become a wall, the grass gaining an inch between visits. Martinez Natural Garden tends the whole of it: mowing and edging, trimming where the blade cannot go, shrub and hedge shaping, beds weeded and dressed, and the cleanups that open and close the growing year. Lots here are compact, so every planting bed sits in the foreground of something. Handled with care, a small garden feels a great deal larger than its fence line suggests.
