January in the Pinelands has a smell all its own — frozen sand, pine, woodsmoke carried a long way on a dry wind. KJP Excavation & Land Management, LLC. runs its winters against that cold: plow routes through driveways and commercial lots, shoveling out walks and entries, spreading salt where traffic packs snow down to glass. Wide open ground takes a plan — where the piles go, which way the melt will run, what refreezes once the sun drops at four-thirty. The routes cover Egg Harbor Township and reach into McKee City, Mays Landing, Hamilton Township and Galloway. The satisfaction is in the map of it: a whole route opened, pile by pile, before the first shift starts.
