Morning comes slow to Egg Harbor City, fog lying low in the pines until the sun burns a hole through it and the sand roads begin to steam. That is the hour Aronia Landscape Design and Construction likes best: dew still heavy, the first pass of the mower laying a dark clean line across a yard that was shaggy an hour before. Pinelands soil is sandy and quick to drain, so it drinks a rain almost as fast as it falls and gives its grass back grudgingly, and every cut, every trimmed fence line, every raked cleanup is made with that in mind. The work runs through Egg Harbor City and out toward Galloway, Mullica Township and Elwood, and each lawn is left edged sharp enough to read from the curb. There is a plain pleasure at the end of a day like that, engines ticking as they cool, the pines going gold, a row of yards behind you that look looked-after.
