Denville runs on two calendars. From April to November the slopes above Estling Lake are green and growing, and Ruiz Landscape LLC is out mowing, trimming, edging, spreading mulch and hauling off leaves. Then the light goes short, the first storm comes over the ridge, and the same trucks are plowing driveways, clearing walks and laying salt before the school buses run. The switch tends to happen overnight, usually in the dark, usually with no warning worth trusting. What carries across both halves is the finish — no clipping left on the walk in July, no ridge of slush across the end of the drive in January.
