A neighborhood goes quiet in a snowfall long before the highways do — the cul-de-sacs fill in, the parked cars round over, and the whole grid of little streets turns soft and shapeless. Chanticleer Community Association handles snow removal for the homes and shared lanes on its side of Cherry Hill: plowing the drives and courts, shoveling walkways and stoops, and spreading salt on the ice that lingers in the shade. The plowing starts in the dark and works outward, court by court, so the first neighbor out at seven finds pavement instead of a problem. There is real satisfaction in a curved lane cleared to its curbs, the banks pushed back where they can't slide into the road. Winter here is a shared thing, and clearing it is too.
