Chatham was called the Rose City once, back when long glasshouses at the edge of town shipped cut roses to New York by rail. Rose City Paving & Construction takes its name from that and its winter work from the weather that follows: plowing driveways and lots, clearing walkways, spreading salt when a storm slides across Morris County overnight. Snow rarely arrives politely here — it comes wet and fast, or it comes at two in the morning, and either way the drives have to be open before the town starts moving. There is a plain pleasure in that first pass down a buried driveway, headlights on, the blade throwing a clean white wall off to one side. By the time the sky lightens the pavement is bare and the day can get on with itself.
