West of town the lima-bean rows and lavender beds run right up to the shoulder of Bayshore Road, and by October the fields have gone the color of a paper bag. Douglass Landscaping Services, L.L.C. works this stretch of Cape May all the way around the calendar: mowing and trimming through the growing months, then fall cleanups that strip the leaves and cut the beds back before the first hard freeze. When a coastal storm swings snow across the peninsula they plow the drives and lanes and salt the walks, opening the way out to the county road. It is unglamorous, useful work, and it shows — farm-country lawns kept short and squared off, a lane passable at seven in the morning. Winter here is short, but it does not knock politely, so the plow stays hitched from December on.
