February in Brielle has a habit of thawing at midday and freezing hard by four, and that is when the real trouble starts — a thin glaze over everything from the ballfields at Brielle Park to the sloped drives closer to the water. Land Rescue works that back half of winter as closely as it works the storms themselves, plowing driveways and lots, opening walkways, and spreading salt before a refreeze can set. An east wind carries damp air inland here, so the ice comes in quiet and clear and is easy to miss until a foot finds it. Getting ahead of that is the point of the entire trade. It is unglamorous work done mostly in the dark, and a town that reaches its cars without thinking about it is the measure of a night gone right.
