Brick's soil remembers the ocean — sandy, quick to drain, generous to weeds that know how to live on very little. For Shore Weed Control spends its Junes on that ground, walking the lawns along Herbertsville Road and the streets that bend down toward the water, treating what shouldn't be there so the grass can close ranks and hold. Mowing, trimming, feeding and the patient repetition of weed control add up to turf that is even underfoot and even to the eye. Salt air and August sun are hard on a lawn in this town; the only real answer is attention, given again and again. The reward is a yard still green into the shoulder of fall, when the beach traffic thins and the light goes long and gold.
