At four in the morning the valley fog lies low over Boonton and every sound carries — a scrape, a tailgate, a truck idling at the top of a drive. Nerf Landscape LLC is often the reason for it, working ahead of the commute: plowing driveways and lots, shoveling steps and walkways, laying salt where the ice keeps trying to come back. When the weather turns the other direction, the same crew is mowing, trimming, edging and hauling off leaves and clippings from the first growth of spring to the last cut of fall. Storms here come in over the Highlands and offer a little warning, and the answer is to be ready before they land. Black pavement by sunrise, straight green lines by summer — that is the whole ambition.
