At eight on a July morning the shade under Bernardsville's old oaks is still cool, and that is the hour to be mowing. Peters Todd's Tree Service cuts lawns in that broken light, working around root flare and low limbs, keeping the blade high where grass has to live on a few hours of sun. Trimming is close work here — around trunks, along bed lines, tight against stone. When the canopy comes down in autumn the cleanup follows it: leaves out of the plantings, off the walks, cleared from the lawn. It's a green, shaded, unhurried kind of yard, and it takes attention to keep it that way.
