Up on the Hardscrabble side the woods press close and the light arrives in pieces through hemlock and old beech. Lawns there are shade lawns — slower, mossier, thin at the margins — and Chapin Landscaping LLC cuts them accordingly, high enough to keep the grass in the fight. There's a sanctuary's worth of birdsong over that hillside all summer, and the mowers are the loudest thing for a mile, briefly, then gone. Spring means pulling the winter litter out from under the shrubs; autumn means staying ahead of a leaf fall that never quite finishes. The reward is small and real: a green room in the trees, edged and swept.
