Come October the ballfields at the community park go gold around the edges, and the whole borough smells like leaves for a month. Shute's Tree Services spends that season on rope work through Barrington's back yards — pruning maples that have grown into each other, trimming low limbs along the rail-line fence, clearing what leans toward a roof before the first ice. A removal gets planned for where the wood can land: sectioned down, rounds stacked at the curb, the chips left for the beds if that's what's wanted. After a hard blow the calls come from the same streets every time, and the job is dragging the tops out and raking the yard back to grass. Nobody notices a tree that was pruned right, which is exactly the idea.
