A nor'easter announces itself in Barnegat before any snow falls: the wind comes off the marsh first, flat and steady, and the pines begin to move. Furey Landscape watches that arrival the way other people watch a clock, because plowing starts when the storm does, not after it. Snow drifts hard across the open lots on this side of the bay, filling a driveway back in twice while the wind is up, so a route gets run more than once and salt goes down where ice likes to set. There is a particular satisfaction in a black driveway at first light with the storm still finishing overhead. That is the whole of it: winter arrives, and the way out stays open.
