Old Barney still stands at the top of the island, and the light sweeping the inlet is the first landmark anybody in this town learns. Lighthouse Landscape mows and maintains the yards beneath it — compact lots of salt-tolerant grass, sand always working its way in from the dunes, hedges trimmed back where the wind has pushed them sideways. The soil here is more beach than loam, so a green lawn at the north end of Long Beach Island is genuinely an accomplishment. Spring cleanups clear the winter's drift out of the beds; summer settles into a steady weekly cut with the edges kept sharp along the walks. Late in the day the light goes long and low over the inlet, and a mown yard takes it beautifully.
