Avenel grew up along the rails, and the streets still run in tidy blocks of postwar houses with lawns about the size of a front room. Landscaping, J.G Diaz mows and maintains them — clean passes across small yards, string-trimming around the fence posts and the porch steps, hedges kept back off the walk. Trains go by all day; the mower keeps its own rhythm underneath. Spring cleanup here means lifting a winter's litter out of the beds and laying fresh mulch that makes a whole block look newer than it is, and autumn means staying ahead of the sycamores. Neat is the goal, and neat is visible from the sidewalk.
