Ampere North is close-built and brick, a neighborhood laid out around the old rail stop, where front lawns are measured in steps rather than acres. Kingdom Grounds tends those squares of green — mowing tight to the walk, edging the strip between sidewalk and curb, keeping hedges square along the property lines. Small yards ask for precision, because there is nowhere for a ragged line to hide. In spring the crocuses come up by the porch rails and the cleanup clears a winter's worth of city grit out of the beds; in October the maples along the side streets let go all at once. Block by block, a well-kept lawn here does a lot of work for the whole street.
