September belongs to Wolfeboro itself: the summer crowd thins, the Cotton Valley Rail Trail gets its quiet back, and the light on the water turns thin and clear. Josh Thomas keeps mowing right through it, cutting, trimming and edging while the grass still puts on growth in the cool air. There is something quietly satisfying about a lawn held tidy in the shoulder season, when nobody is around to see it but the person who lives there. Fall cleanups follow, leaves off the turf and beds cut back, and spring starts the whole cycle over again. Wolfeboro and its neighbors on the eastern side of the lake are where the work is.
