Hollyhock Plow & Garden

About Hollyhock Plow & Garden

The work begins in rhythm — a mower drawing its stripe straight across a lawn, a plow blade curling a wave of snow off a driveway before the sky over Windham has settled on a color, hands easing a root ball down into stubborn glacial soil. Hollyhock Plow & Garden is a garden design, lawn care, landscape maintenance, seasonal cleanup and snow plowing outfit working the granite-and-oak hills of southern New Hampshire, where old stone walls wander off into white pine and the late light comes in gold and low. There is a plain, physical pleasure in what it leaves behind: an edge cut clean enough to read like a pencil line, beds combed out and mulched, plantings set where they will want to grow. Spring cleanups lift away a winter's worth of oak leaf and grit and hand the yard back ready for new bloom; after the first real storm, the drive is open and the day can simply begin. Windham, Salem, Hampstead, Derry, Londonderry, Litchfield, Hudson and Pelham — dooryards and long gravel drives, each left better than it was found.
