The Souhegan drops through the middle of Wilton in a rush of white water past the old brick mills, and in a storm the whole village goes quiet under it. Dangerous Enthusiasm plows the driveways on those steep Wilton streets, shovels walks and steps, and puts down sand and salt where the grade won't forgive ice. Hill-town plowing means backing down pitches in the dark and knowing which turnarounds still work at two in the morning. Snow here often comes wet and heavy up the Souhegan valley, the kind that has to be pushed early or not at all. Come daylight, a cleared driveway on a hill is worth exactly what it looks like it's worth.
