Up at Wakefield Corner the old white houses stand shoulder to shoulder along the road, and their front lawns have been mowed into the same shapes for a very long time. White Lightning keeps those shapes — clean passes across the front, trimming tight to the granite underpinning, the edge cut where lawn meets brick walk. In April the roadside strip is raked free of sand and thatch; in October the maples are taken off before they mat down. The village looks its best in low sun, when a fresh cut throws its own faint stripe across the yard. That is the hour the work is aiming for.
