Wildcat is a fitting name in hills where bobcats still slip unseen through the oak and birch above Surry's village. On an October afternoon those hillsides wear the cat's own colors: tawny oak, russet maple, birch leaves gold in the low sun. Wildcat Excavation LLC takes on the season's last lawn work as the leaves come down, mowing yards back to a clean, low cut so the grass heads into winter tidy instead of matted. The work moves briskly through the short afternoons, racing early dusk and the frost that will whiten everything by morning. When it is finished, a trim lawn lies beneath the blazing trees like a swept floor in a bright room.
