At two in the morning the Route 1 lights are the only color in Seabrook, and the beach streets past the estuary are stacked with snow the plows have thrown twice already. Toros Customs works that shift — pushing driveways clear, opening up the mailbox side, shoveling the paths and stairs a truck can never reach. Down near the water it is a fight against wind as much as accumulation; a drive cleared at midnight can be half filled by four, so you go back. Salt and sand go on the slick spots, especially where a driveway tips down toward the road. Come daylight the house looks like it slept straight through the whole thing, which is exactly the idea.
