At dusk in January, Canobie Lake lies flat and white, the roller-coaster tracks along its shore traced in frost and the summer crowds long gone home. That is Salem in its stillest season, and it is when Everett's Lawn and Snow gets busy. The snow sifting down over the dark pines by the water lands just as thick on front steps and side streets, and the work follows it in as the evening deepens toward blue. Under porch lights the drives return one by one, cut straight and pushed wide so the next storm has somewhere to go. The name carries lawn as well as snow, but on a winter night the job is measured in one thing: a clear way home after sundown.
