Early on a Rye morning the fog rolls in off the Atlantic and lies along Route 1A until the sun burns a hole through it, and somewhere behind that white curtain a mower is already drawing its first clean line. Seaside Landscaping keeps lawns on this narrow shelf of New Hampshire coast, mowing and tending grass that grows between salt marsh and stone wall, in soil that tastes the ocean every time the wind swings east. Come winter, when a nor'easter throws spray over the seawall and packs the driveways solid, the plow trucks are out ahead of the alarm clocks, opening a path to the road before the first commuter stirs. The pleasure of it is plain — the crisp edge along a walkway, the dooryard cleared down to bare pavement, a yard that looks looked-after from the street. From Rye out toward Portsmouth, New Castle, North Hampton and Greenland, it is work measured in mornings.
