Summer mornings up the Stinson Lake road arrive with mist still lying on the water and the mountain behind it just beginning to show its ridge. Little Bears works those hours, mowing dooryards and camp lawns around Rumney while the dew is still burning off the grass. Growth comes fast in July, and keeping a lawn even — cut close around the propane tank and the fence line, edged along the gravel drive — is what makes a small house look looked-after. By autumn the maples near Quincy Bog turn early, and the leaves come off in one big week that has to be gathered before the first hard rain. Same lawns, same back roads, every year, and the pleasure of leaving each one tidier than it was found.
