There is a plain satisfaction in the order of it — foundation prep, driveway and road prep, grading, then final grading and loaming — a lot that was ruts and clay in the morning left level by dusk, shedding water the way it ought to, ready to hold a house. From Rochester the work reaches out across coastal New Hampshire, southern Maine, and northeastern Massachusetts. The best of it vanishes under new grass and stays there, holding, for as long as the land does.
