The Suncook River slides through the middle of Pittsfield, and the lawns along it wake early, silver with dew before the sun clears the eastern ridge. Eco-Lawn LLC works those mornings — mowing, trimming, and edging the places where grass meets granite step and gravel drive. There is a particular satisfaction in the last pass of the day, when the stripes lie straight down a dooryard and the smell of cut grass hangs in the cooling air. Spring and fall bring the heavier work: raking winter's grit out of the turf in April, carrying maple leaves off it in October. It is ordinary work done attentively, in a town where people notice.
