By the middle of June, Pelham's evenings smell like cut grass and pond water, and the light hangs on past eight over Little Island Pond. Paquette Landscaping spends those long days mowing, trimming and edging lawns from the Gumpas Pond neighborhoods out to the wooded lots on the back roads, with mulch work and cleanups on either side of summer. Under all that oak canopy a Pelham lawn has to fight for its sun, and keeping one thick takes a steady hand and a regular week. The good part of the job comes when the mower shuts off — dust settling, the yard suddenly quiet and finished. In fall the leaves arrive in waves, and the work turns to carrying them away.
