Late in October the light over Newport turns low and gold, and the hills out toward Pollards Mills go the color of old copper. Simple Landcare spends those weeks raking, blowing and carting leaves off yards on the rail-trail side of town, work that follows a summer of mowing, trimming and mulching. The name says it plainly: grass cut, beds tidied, the yard handed back to you plain and right. Newport dooryards can lie ankle-deep in maple leaf by the first hard frost, and it is a fine thing to watch a lawn come out from under all of it — green, combed, ready to sleep. Spring, the same yards get opened back up, and the year starts over.
